Concentrated mineral drops are exactly what the name suggests: a liquid concentrate of dissolved minerals, added to drinking water a few drops at a time. They are one of the three practical ways to remineralise RO water, and the only one that does not involve modifying your purifier.

How they work

The concentrate holds minerals in dissolved ionic form — already dissociated in water, as they occur in natural mineral springs, rather than as a powder that has to break down first. Adding a measured dose to a glass or bottle disperses those minerals through the water immediately.

Because the minerals are already dissolved, there is nothing to stir in, settle out or wait for.

Why the dose is so small

The clue is in "concentrated". The point of a concentrate is that the minerals are present at high density, so the volume needed per litre is tiny. A typical dose is measured in drops rather than spoons, which is what makes a small bottle last a long time.

What to look for

  • Ionic form — dissolved rather than powdered, so it disperses without residue.
  • A natural source — mineral water sources produce a broad natural spectrum rather than a short list of added compounds.
  • No taste or colour at dose — you want the minerals, not a flavour.
  • Clear dosing guidance — you should know exactly how much to add per glass or litre.
  • Testing — a certificate of analysis showing what is actually in the bottle.

Drops or a cartridge?

A cartridge is automatic once fitted, which suits people who would rather not think about it. Drops give you control over dose, work with any water anywhere including bottled or filtered water while travelling, and need no plumbing.

The practical difference is that a cartridge treats all water passing through the purifier, while drops treat the water you are about to drink.
